Haydn is the underlying theme and source of inspiration in a programme packed with musical gems. Captivating movements taken from his many symphonies are alternated with diverse pieces that make colourful reference to the great master. Papa Haydn’s Parrot by the Swiss violinist and composer Helena Winkelman is her idiosyncratic interpretation of Haydn’s ‘Bird’ Quartet. Caroline Shaw is the youngest Pulitzer prizewinner in history. In her work Entr’acte she quotes from Haydn’s final completed quartet, with by turns subtle and exuberant transitions to the 21st century. We conclude with the rarely performed La Muse et le Poète by Saint-Saëns, a dialogue between the expressive violin and the more serious cello. The French cellist and first-prizewinner of the Queen Elisabeth Competition Victor Julien-Lafferière makes his debut with Amsterdam Sinfonietta.
