The Last Shostakovich

The tenderness and strength of saying goodbye

tot en met

Ivan Karizna returns to Amsterdam Sinfonietta to perform Shostakovich’s moving Viola Sonata, in an arrangement for cello and strings.

After his impressive debut with Amsterdam Sinfonietta during the Amsterdam Cello Biennale in 2022, cellist Ivan Karizna returns to the orchestra with Shostakovich’s moving Viola Sonata, in an arrangement for cello and strings. Karizna, prize winner of competitions including the Queen Elisabeth Competition, reveals both the vulnerability and strength of farewell in this touching final work by Shostakovich—described by the composer himself as an “adagio in memory of Beethoven”.

Aria by Weinberg, Shostakovich’s friend and kindred spirit, is a small but deeply poetic jewel for string quartet that gains even more shine in its version for string orchestra.
