Brahms and Schubert

Chamber music by Amsterdam Sinfonietta

tot en met

The two composers Brahms and Schubert take center stage in our chamber music concert — featuring the most famous work by one and the very first chamber music piece by the other.

Schubert’s String Quintet in C is considered one of the greatest chamber music masterworks ever written. One of his most profound and emotionally rich compositions, it was completed just before his death in 1828 at the age of 31. The addition of an extra cello – rather than the usual second viola – adds a warm, deep tone to this late-Romantic work. At around the same age as Schubert, Brahms completed his first string sextet, with an illustrious career still ahead of him. This work already displays a fully ripened talent, revealing his extraordinary mastery of structure, harmony and melody, while at the same time expressing deep personal emotions.
