Bach & Bloch

with Steven Isserlis

tot en met

Steven Isserlis makes a return appearance as soloist with Amsterdam Sinfonietta, performing Bloch’s heartfelt music and C.P.E. Bach’s effervescent cello concerto. The programme also features Arensky’s homage to Tchaikovsky and a new version of Norman’s popular piece Sabina.

The British cellist Steven Isserlis joins forces with Amsterdam Sinfonietta, giving a sparkling performance of Bach’s energetic, lilting cello concerto and Bloch’s From Jewish Life. Isserlis considers one of the movements from Bloch’s piece, the entreating Prayer, to be one of the most divinely beautiful pieces ever written for cello.

Visiting the fifth-century basilica Santa Sabina in Rome, Andrew Norman was spellbound by the magical morning light shining through the window panes of transluscent stone, illuminating the marble and mosaic surfaces. This was the source of inspiration for his exciting and popular work Sabina, which he has specially arranged for Amsterdam Sinfonietta. Arensky’s chamber symphony was intended as a monument to his deceased friend and mentor Tchaikovsky. This quintessentially Russian work will capture the heart of every listener.
